Day 2 at the Grand Canyon

Thanks to the National Park Service shuttle buses, we were able to see the canyon from various viewpoints all the way to the western end of the south rim of the canyon.  Even though some of the viewpoints were less than a mile apart, the scene changed dramatically each time.  At some points we could see the hiking trails going down to the floor of the canyon and we could see hikers that looked like ants on the trails.  We could see rafts on the Colorado River that appeared to be tiny white dots.

One young fellow from Slovenia that sat next to us on the bus was carrying two packs.  In one day he hiked all the way to the floor of the canyon, spent the night, swam in the Colorado River and hiked all the way back up the next day.  Incredible.

We went back to the canyon this evening to watch the sunset and it was very impressive, too.  It was very cold and the wind was blowing 15 to 25 mph, which made it even colder.  As we were there bundled up in the heaviest clothes we brought with us, we watched countless numbers of men, women, boys and girls walking around in shorts, t-shirts and flip flops.  Unbelievable.
